#BecauseHeLives

Jesus Christ lived. He walked the Holy Land, working miracles and teaching truth. Then He was crucified. But His death was not the end. Because of His Resurrection, we will live again. Because of His sacrifice, we can rise above sin to experience true joy. Because He lives, we can find His help and healing every day of our lives.

Why Bother Memorizing The Living Christ?

Elder Richard G. Scott said, "Learning, pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world.

Great power can come from memorizing scriptures. To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.

Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing."

Tips for Making Memorization of "The Living Christ" Easier and Meaningful

Tips on making memorization easier and meaningful:
As you start to memorize a verse . . .

  • Read in the scriptures the context of each verse you memorize.
  • Try to gain a clear understanding of what each verse actually means. You may want to read the verse in other scriptural translations or paraphrases or perhaps consult a commentary-after you've done your personal study!
  • Read the verse through several times thoughtfully, aloud or in a whisper. This will help you grasp the verse as a whole. Each time you read it, say the topic, reference, verse, and then the reference again. Discuss the verse with God in prayer, and continue to seek His help for success in Scripture memory.

While you are memorizing the verse . . .

  • Work on saying the verse aloud as much as possible.
  • Learn the topic and reference first.
  • After learning the topic and reference, learn the first phrase of the verse. Once you have learned the topic, reference, and the first phrase and have repeated them several times, continue adding more phrases after you can quote correctly what you have already learned.
  • Think about how the verse applies to you and your daily circumstances.
  • Always include the topic and reference as part of the verse as you learn and review it.
After you can quote correctly the topic, reference, verse, and reference again . . .

  • Writing the verse out can be helpful. This deepens the impression in your mind.
  • Find a friend to check you on the verse. Better yet, memorize together!
  • Review the verse immediately after learning it, and repeat it frequently in the next few days. This is crucial for fixing the verse firmly in your mind because of the tendency to forget something recently learned.

Review! Review! Review! Repetition is the best way to engrave the verses on your memory.

"The Living Christ" Challenge

It is our goal to sing it together after on September 26th after the Women's Session of General Conference. This challenge is a great way for us to focus on our theme, "Becoming a Woman of Christ," and to imprint these inspired words permanently upon our hearts, becoming more unified as a stake in the process.

Carrie Wrigley, of the 8th ward, who wrote the music, has provided sheet music, recordings, and other materials to help us fulfill this quest together.  She has provided a place on her website where you can download and then learn the music. PLEASE SEE YOUR RELIEF SOCIETY PRESIDENT FOR DOWNLOAD INFORMATION.

10 Ways to Help Memorize The Living Christ

It has been a week since the challenge was issued to memorize "The Living Christ." If you have not yet received the login information to download the music, please see your Relief Society President. She has been given all the necessary information.

The Daybreak Stake has issued the same challenge to their youth. They have come up with 50 Ways to Memorize "The Living Christ." Here are their first ten ideas:

1. Make a firm personal commitment to memorize it by September 26th. Tell someone who is important to you that you are doing it and write it down.
2. Recite it every night before you go to bed.
3. Break it up and memorize it in small sections.
4. Put the words to music. This has already been done for us by Sister Carrie Wrigley.
5. Challenge your family to memorize it with you.
6. Keep a written copy where you can slowly block out words you have memorized.
7. Review the words during Sacrament Meeting.
8. Make a pledge with a friend that you will learn it together and then honor that pledge with each other.
9. Recite "The Living Christ" each week during Family Home Evening.
10. Place a copy on your bathroom mirror.

The Living Christ Challenge

Dear Sisters,

Yesterday in our Women's Conference, the Young Women of the 3rd Ward performed "The Living Christ" set to music.  Because of the power of this music, as a Stake Relief Society Presidency, we are putting forth the challenge for all sisters to learn "The Living Christ" music.

It is our goal to learn it by end of September. We will gather as a group after the General Women's meeting broadcast and sing "The Living Christ" together.

In the October 2013 General Conference, Elder Robert D. Hales said, "The world is moving away from the Lord faster and farther than ever before. The adversary has been loosed upon the earth. We watch, hear, read, study, and share the words of prophets to be forewarned and protected. For example, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” was given long before we experienced the challenges now facing the family. The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles” was prepared in advance of when we will need it most."

We are grateful for your support and for the excitement we felt at Woman's Conference from the sisters about the challenge. We know we will be blessed, faith will increase, testimonies will be strengthened, and unity among us will expand as we carry out this inspired goal together.

All our love,
Terri, Leann, Jackie, Sherry.
